Tips for Getting the Most Out of Non-Surgical Body Contouring
Although these procedures do not require any downtime, there are actions you may take to maximize the benefits.
We spoke with renowned dermatologists and plastic surgeons to get their thoughts on some of the most popular non-surgical body contouring procedures currently being performed.
Non-Surgical Body Contouring Techniques
Body reshaping methods that aren’t surgical usually fall into one of the following categories:
Cryolipolysis (like CoolSculpting®) fat freezers
SculpSure®, VanquishTM, TruSculpt®, and other fat melters use lasers, radiofrequency (RF), and/or thermal energy, while electromagnetic muscle toners (like Emsculpt®) use electromagnetic radiation.
Injectables that dissolve fat, smooth cellulite, and create collagen (hi, Kybella®, QwoTM, hyper-diluted Radiesse® or Sculptra®)
None of these treatments are intended to help you lose weight. Instead, they’re made to refine issue areas like the stomach, thighs, upper arms, and butt for a more contoured look. And, while each of these procedures uses a different type of technology to eliminate excess fat, tone muscles, or smooth cellulite, they are all called ‘no downtime’ treatments. Nonetheless, following this guidance will aid in optimizing your outcomes.
1. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE
What is the most common piece of post-surgery advise from all of our experts? Take a sip. “Stay hydrated throughout and after the treatment,” advises Marie Hayag, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. Alcohol should be avoided and water should be consumed instead.
2. SKIP THE SALT
In the same line, limit your sodium consumption. “Because the body is in a short-term inflammatory state, we recommend restricting salt consumption to almost nothing and abstaining from alcohol for 48 hours,” Dr. Neinstein says. “Both lead to bloating and edema.” A board-certified dermatologist in New York City, Paul Jarrod Frank, MD, emphasizes the need of avoiding salt, especially in between Emsculpt Neo® treatments.
3. AVOID THE GYM
While you may be motivated to hit the gym to improve your outcomes, keep your first day or two’s program easy (read: relaxed). Patients are advised to wait 24 hours before exercising at Dr. Neinstein’s office to allow metabolic poisons to be flushed out and for muscle recuperation. Because the treatment region may be painful, Dr. Hayag advises that you take it easy following the surgery and “wear loose, comfortable clothing to assist minimize any possible soreness.”
